Traumformat #1 – PerformanceGarten (2018)

Watch us work it

Today, work has become a central benchmark of life. Few things occupy us more than the question of why we work, for whom and under what conditions. Our working conditions are increasingly characterized by flexibilization, personal responsibility and a real compulsion to self-realization and self-marketing. Just doing the bare minimum, getting the job done, has not been enough for a long time. For the world of work seems to present itself almost as an end in itself, without cause, without reason and without goal – travailler pour le travail. It is not only a matter of working successfully and efficiently, but also of presenting success and efficiency as personal assets: It’s the performance that has to be right.

Artists also perform their work. And the way they do this seems prototypical of how work and private life are increasingly merging: artistic work is a passion and knows no end of the day. The artist is independent and at the same time dependent on the market. It must be highly flexible and mobile without losing its profile. What happens now when artists work on labor? And what happens when they do this performatively, live and with their bodies?

Cheers for Fears supports interdisciplinary exchange projects

Under the label Cheers for Fears Dream Formats, art and art theory students and other actors of the Young Scene NRW had the opportunity in the winter semester 2018/19, with financial and planning support from Cheers for Fears, to organize one of a total of three events or formats each, which brought together fellow students from different disciplines.

The Cheers for Fears initiative thrives on the commitment and creativity of students and young artists in NRW. That’s why this format responds to the inspirations and impulses of the Cheers community. In the selection of the small projects, we considered important the motivation letter and the interdisciplinarity of the projects, as well as the fact that the three formats finally selected were of different character and took place in different cities.

Cheers for Fears offered

  • organizational advice
  • Network & promotion for the event
  • 4.000€ per event (fee for the organizer, speakers, guest artists. As well as financing travel expenses, technology, equipment, accommodation, catering, advertising and photo documentation).

In the framework of our “Dream Formats” we have chosen 3 projects that we co-produce and support financially as well as ideally: The student platform Performancegarten has chosen for the sixth edition “watch us work it” on October 19 and 20, increasingly presented artistic works that transcend the performative space and focuses on joint conversation and exchange formats. This time, contributions beyond the region were invited from Germany and abroad. Then, in November, Jonathan Omer Mizrahi initiated a romantic reenactment in Grevenbroich, in which the illumination of the sky plays a not insignificant role. Finally, in January, Silvia Ehnis invited all interested parties to an experimental laboratory that explores the conditions for creative, artistic encounters.
